If you are interested in a baby chipmunk or have any other questions concerning chipmunks please feel free to leave a comment or to e mail me, julian.patti.tucker@gmail.com It is essential that you aquire appropriate housing for your chipmunk before adoption. Chipmunks need a large cage or an aviary so that they can run, climb and jump. They also need their own nesting box to sleep in and feel safe. If you have any further questions about housing... just ask :o)

You can find detailed pictures at the bottom of my blog that show how to determine the sex of your chipmunk(s)

type of carrier you will need... :o) I also have a couple of chipmunks for sale

This is Chai my favourite chipmunk who is also not a good mum (she ate her first two children from her first litter)...

I now have one dilute male and one agouti female that are for sale. Please e mail me for more details at julian.patti.tucker@gmail.com

This is the chipmunk carrier that I use for mine. When you come to get your new baby or babies you will need something like this... I also used this one as a hospital for my grandma chipmunk (Chippy) who was very poorly for about two weeks to keep her safe and quiet until she was well.

chipmunk info

Hi... I have had a load of questions recently.... lol.

Chipmunks are really great pets and very hardy. They are not cuddly and they can and usually will bite if they are frightened or mishandled.

Chipmunks usually have about 2-3 litters a year but from my experience that is just a loose figure... my oldest chipmunk had 5 in one year and I had to separate her from her husband to give her a break.

They usually have between 3 and 6 per litter.

They are pregnant for a month.

The babies open their eyes and ears at one month old and start to come out of the nest....and are ready to go to new homes at two months of age.

There is one thing I forgot to mention in a response to what they eat and if anything is poisonous to them .... pips from plumbs, cherries,... peaches are poisonous and you should also not use that type of branch in your cage... has nasty stuff in it that can make them very sick... forgot about that one until my hubby reminded me.

Don't use wood chips in their cage... they can get splinters in their mouth and cause infection.

Chipmunks fight with each other... I have wound powder bought from a pet store... just dab it on to wound area and it works well.

I read that chipmunks live for around 7 years... my oldest is now over 7 years... so I guess I will just have to wait and see how long she lives.

They need a big cage to run around in and a wheel to run on... do a web search for chinchilla cage and you will find plenty... ebay is a good place to look.

They need nesting boxes to sleep in... and nesting material... straw..and nesting material from the pet store works great.

They will eat flowers and bugs!!! like... grasshoppers and dandelions

NEVER EVER grab your chipmunk by the tail... it will snap off... and they don't grow back. I have a fish pond net that I keep handy in case I have to capture a chipmunk on the loose. They also don't like to be held tight... they will bite you... cup them in your hands, close to your body so they feel safe. I only have one chipmunk that I would say is tame... it was her choice... she decided that she loved me... she rides on my shoulder...and looks in my pockets for treats. Her sister likes the idea of coming out of her cage for a visit but soon decides that she would rather run around and hide under the couch and go places that I can't reach her. She is a brat...but she is the best mum ever.

Chipmunks sleep all night long.

They can catch a cold from you.

They make cute chirping noises that mean different things...

new pics of the babies

the reason why I don't have many pics of the parents

is because 99.9% of them turn out like this

chipmunks don't like to pose for the camera.... there are pics on this blog that you can see if you go back in my posts... and little films as well.

Sage had 6 babies... OMG!!!

From what I can tell... she had two dilute (white)... one female and one male... and the other 4 are brown.. all female... from what I can see... {so hard to tell this early... but... I think that is what we have}... the two on the top are dilute... they are very pink compared to the agouti (brown). I am soooooooooooooooo excited!!! I will try and get a pic of Chai's baby who is an agouti... and I suspect is male... she is still such a freak with the whole thing... poor Chai...oh well.

Baby News

Chai had her first litter but it didn't go so well. She ended up with only one live baby out of three... I was a little sad at first but it was her first litter and she had no idea what to do with them.

Sage is also expecting... I would guess that her babies will arrive in a week to two weeks. She is much more like her mum so I expect that she will do better with her first litter.... fingers crossed!

I think Chai's baby is a boy... from the glimpse I got of it... he will be ready to go in about 7 to 8 weeks if it all goes well.

I will post pics when I can get a chance to take some.

Babies will be £40 each and we can deliver if the drive isn't too far from Bristol for a small fee to cover traveling costs.

still no babies yet

But I have a few photos that were sent to me by other chipmunk people :o)

This is a really nice aviary that one of my chipmunk people
built for her babies that she got from me.

She has given me some really good ideas for how I want to build mine this summer.

These photos were sent to me from Italy!!!
Notice the fantastic squirrel tatt on her wrist??!!

This is one of her lovely chippies eating a strawberry.

Chipmunk Updates

A couple of months ago Julian (my wonderful adoring husband) got me a new male chipmunk. He is perfect and the girls have fallen head over heels for him. He is still young and isn't mature enough to produce any offspring as of yet but is keen to give it a try. I am optimistic that my chipmunks will have some babies this summer or in the fall. I will certainly make sure to post any updates of upcoming litters etc. I will be selling the babies for £40 each. I will let them go in pairs but same sex only so that they won't inbreed. All of them will have dilute and agouti blood lines as the Fathers of all the chipmunk were dilute and the mum's were agouti. This means that some of the babies could be dilute and some agouti and their offspring could be either as well.

They will be hand tamed just like the past litters to ensure that they will make great pets.

Adult Female

I haven't got any breeding plans for this year yet. I have too many females to be hones.... two of which I am very fond of and will never part with and one that I will consider selling to someone who wishes to breed them and has a male or will get a male at the same time. Chippies get very lonely if they are on their own.... especially if they are use to being w/ other chippies. This chippie is from my last litter so she is still very young.

email me if you are interested.

Thanks.

Giving mum a break and Chai

I decided to re home Marmite because he wouldn't let Chippy have a rest. Chipmunks are supposed to have two litters a year, Chippy had four litters and the last one really got her down. I did decided to keep two girls from the last litter to keep her company and to keep for future breeding.

One of the girls has proven to be quite a character and has bonded w/ me. Every time I open the cage door she hops out onto my arm and climbs all over me. She loves to go up my sleeves and in my pockets if possible. She also likes to sit on top of my head because it is the highest point on my body. I read that they like to do that if you have a really friendly one like this one. I have named her Chai... after the Indian spiced milk tea that I like to drink. It just suited her and I like the sound of the word.

When I decide to breed Chai or her sister I will post an update. I think I need to wait until next year to do so and give them a chance to just be chipmunks for a while. I will be breeding her w/ my friends chipmunk, she has two agouti males.
