If you are interested in a baby chipmunk or have any other questions concerning chipmunks please feel free to leave a comment or to e mail me, julian.patti.tucker@gmail.com It is essential that you aquire appropriate housing for your chipmunk before adoption. Chipmunks need a large cage or an aviary so that they can run, climb and jump. They also need their own nesting box to sleep in and feel safe. If you have any further questions about housing... just ask :o)

You can find detailed pictures at the bottom of my blog that show how to determine the sex of your chipmunk(s)

Have your chipmunks every bitten you, and is this typical chipmunk behaviour?

Do you recommend wheels in a chipmunk cage?

All animals bite given the right circumstances and usually the owners fault. Yes I have been bitten by my chipmunks...but it was only when they were freaking out and I was stopping a huge fight. It was my fault, I should have taken the older chipmunk out. Chai was in labour (she is the one who didn't cope well with her first litter) and she attacked everyone including Chippy who is the old grandma. Chippy couldn't defend herself so I stepped in to rescue her from being killed. Chippy made a full recovery and now has her very own retirement condo ;o)
Chippy once bit me when I first bought her 7 years ago from a pet shop. She was traumatized and scared out of her wits... it wasn't her fault, she had been teased for such a long time before I got her (on sale for half price because she wasn't perfect...bless her) It took me years to tame her and get her to trust me. It isn't normal behaviour for a hand tamed chippy to bite. I tame all my chippies by hand.. .they don't like to be held and trapped.. but they will eat from your hand and sit on you. You must never grab a chippy if they escape... and never never never by the tail or it will break off. You catch them either by cupping your hands around them and then cuddling them to your body to get them back to the cage or use a fish pond net and place it over them.

Thank-you, that was very helpful. I'm glad you hand tame your babies, and I hope chippy is enjoying her retirement. Could you tell me, is 16mm too wide bar spacing for a chipmunk cage?

Madwag said...

16mm... yes... that should be fine.. like regulart small pet cage type spacing right?

Madwag said...

Yes... they love wheels... they run for miles and miles every day on them... I often ask my chippies where they are going in such a hurry!!! lol... on the wheel... all day long sometimes...

Lol
Well, what do you mean by regular small pet cage type spacing? It is not squares if that's what you mean, it is just vertical bars.

Madwag said...

lol...yes... that size will be just fine....

Thanx
I really hope I will be allowed chipmunks as pets. How big are chipmunks (round a bout)?

Do you let your chipmunks have free range of the house sometimes, and is this a good thing to do?

Anonymous said...

Hello, do chipmunks like to dig? I have heard this but is it a rumour?
Some light from an experienced person please!

Madwag said...

chipmunks are about the size of a small rat... they can run around your house supervised... they could escape or get into someplace that isn't safe if you don't keep an eye on them... and yes...they dig... they will dig up house plants etc...they live in the ground when in the wild...they are a ground squirrel that burrows in the ground :o) but live in nesting boxes in the cage.

Thank you, what are kind of food do they eat?

Madwag said...

I buy chipmunk musli at the pet store... they also eat monkey nuts and meal worms... all sorts of fresh fruit and veg...corn... pin nuts etc... you have to have things for them to chew on to condition their teeth as well
