If you are interested in a baby chipmunk or have any other questions concerning chipmunks please feel free to leave a comment or to e mail me, julian.patti.tucker@gmail.com It is essential that you aquire appropriate housing for your chipmunk before adoption. Chipmunks need a large cage or an aviary so that they can run, climb and jump. They also need their own nesting box to sleep in and feel safe. If you have any further questions about housing... just ask :o)

You can find detailed pictures at the bottom of my blog that show how to determine the sex of your chipmunk(s)

Can you feed chipmunks yogurt?
I have heard of this happening before but I don't know what to make of it.

Madwag said...

You can see if they like yoghurt... I wouldn't feed it too much... just like anything else... you have to mix up their diet a bit and give them some variety. I have never tried yoghurt before so I can't say from experience... :o)

Thanks, what are some of your chipmunks favourite foods?

Madwag said...

my chipmunks like loads of things.

chipmunk muesli
monkey nuts
sunflower seeds
apple
meal worms (both live and dried)
lettuce
pomegranate
melon
flowers like dandelions etc...

where can you buy live meal worms.
Is there anything in particular that is poisonous for chipmunks

Madwag said...

I buy my meal worms from a pet shop... and... poisonous... just don't put anything but pine or fruit tree wood in the cage... don't use wood chips for bedding etc... it can cause the chippies to get splinters in their mouths... don't feed them anything that would be poisonous to you really... they even like chicken bones...the get the marrow out of it

Lol!
Do they actually eat the meat of the bone? If chipmunks get ill and die or are about to die, will their housemates eat them? This may sound horrible but I have had experience of this with baby rats (Sooooo sad)

Madwag said...

yes...they will eat the meat too... if there is any left on the bone... and yes...they can or may eat the old and sick ones...they are like that... they eat their babies sometimes... they are animals at the end of the day... so they act like it...lol

yEAH it was so sad with the rats, but I guess that's what they'd do in the wild, to deterr predators, but it's still kind of stupid!
Do chipmunks drink from a drip bottle like most other rodents?

Madwag said...

yes... from a rodent water bottle...lol

At what age do you start playing with the babies? just curious.

Madwag said...

I start to handle them right from the start... the mum chipmunks don't mind if I do because I interact with them all the time. I didn't hold the babies until they were about 5 days old... I needed to let mum and dad chipmunk get used to the idea of babies being there all of a sudden.

Wow, so your babies are really tame then. Are chipmunks cuddly animals generally then?

I have a problem. Isaw my chipmunk to hold her baby in her mouth. Is that normal? And also I haven't heard anything from the baby since today.it is possible the baby not to be alive? Please somebody help

Madwag said...

hi zikos

yes... I don't know why they do it but all of my chipmunks have done it... even the dad will run around w/ a baby in his mouth. My dad chipmunk even kidnapped a baby because he wanted his very own. Have a look in the nest and see if the baby is in there...how many babies do you have? I know it is distressing to see your chipmunks run around with the babies but just leave them to it... one of my chipmunks even ate two of her babies her first litter...she just didn't know what to do with them or what they were... she let one live.

Hi

i have two White chipmunks and just a couple of months ago they had babies but I'm not sure how many as they ate them. A couple of days ago the female started the mating call again. Are there any tips or tricks to make sure they don't eat the next litter if she is pregnant again.

Thank you in advance

Hi Raz1986

The only thing I can suggest is that you leave them alone... my chipmunk just had a litter and killed all of her babies... I think because she didn't feel secure ... there was a lot going on last weekend... noise and people... it was the first time she had done that... broke my heart too.
